A common phrase around the Old Town office is that you never have a second opportunity to make a first impression.
This is the same when it comes to the architectural features in your custom home. When designing your home, it’s important to consider how each feature will age with not only your family, but with trends as well. Here are the top four architectural trends we’ve identified for homeowners this year.
CABINETRY THAT’S MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
Homeowners are continually looking for ways to make their homes more efficient. One of the trends we’ve seen amongst homeowners is creating cabinetry that’s more than just a cabinet. Often, cabinets are used to store pots and pans, normal kitchen essentials, however now they’re serve a dual purpose – an aesthetically pleasing appearance while offering a walk-in pantry behind the doors.
OPEN STAIRS TO ALLOW MORE LIGHT TO LOWER LEVELS
A big concern with basements or lower levels is lack of natural light. With the advent of daylight and lookout windows, it’s becoming less of a problem for homeowners. A new trend that has been taking homeowners by storm is having the stairwell open to bring in even more light. This creates a more open environment for a home, rather than secluded sections which can be desirable for those looking to fully embrace an open concept floor plan.
CLEAN, SIMPLE TRIM
Every decade, there is always something new to try with trim in homes. Recently, homeowners have been opting for simpler, clean-lined trim over highly ornate trim that was popular in the early 2000’s and 2010’s. Moving into the new decade, expect to see trim used in new ways, from wall decoration to ceiling treatments.
FULL MASONRY EXTERIORS
Full masonry, which are homes with more masonry than siding, are popular again thanks to custom neighborhoods such as Chatham Hills and Jackson’s Grant. While Hardee Plank is always a safe bet for construction, masonry has had a resurgence in recent months. With advancement in exterior paint, brick and stone can now be any color you desire.
